The NÓTT Story

Rebecca & Mel created NÓTT with the aim of finding an alternative to silk that could provide the same health and beauty benefits as traditional silk without causing harm to the environment or its inhabitants.

We went about searching for a sustainable alternative that does not involve the unnecessary practice of boiling silkworms in hot water until their cocoons unravel.

Did you know… up to 3,000 silkworms are killed to produce half a kilogram of silk.

Learning about this practice was troubling, and we knew that there had to be a better way. Eventually, we discovered a fabric that has a similar texture to silk and offers all of its benefits, but without any of the associated guilt. This fabric is produced from wood pulp extracted from forests that are sustainably managed and support biodiversity while capturing and storing atmospheric carbon. This fabric is also certified by The Vegan Society.

This fabric is TENCEL™ LUXE, and is a biodegradable, cruelty free botanic material that uses an environmentally friendly closed loop system that recycles process water and more than 99% of the solvent to transform renewable, biodegradable wood-based cellulose into a refined, smooth, and silky filament.

After finding the perfect silk alternative, we needed a name that would do it justice. As we searched for inspiration, we looked into our Norse heritage and turned to their mythology, and found NÓTT was the goddess of sleep, dreams, and night. When we said the name aloud, NÓTT SILK, we knew instantly that it was the perfect fit for our brand.
